2011 Vizsla Club of Illinois Summer Specialties

~Build It and They Will Come~

This years VCOI Summer Specialty was one for the record books! Not only did the event generate more revenue than years’ prior but we hosted one of the largest Vizsla Specialty Shows in the country!

It all started with a redesign of the event featuring Vizsla Supported on Friday, followed by two days of back-to-back Specialties and Sweeps. It was hard work but worth it to take a dream and build it into a reality. In looking for judges, we worked closely with the kennel club to identify preferred judges that both owners and breeders would want to show off their Vizsla(s) to. They needed to have a wealth of knowledge on the breed, an appreciation for the unique characteristics that set the Vizsla apart from other sporting breeds, as well as the ability to provide honest and earnest opinions on the entrants. Thank you to: Ms Joy S. Brewster, Ms Diane Shearer, Mr. Sam Houston McDonald and Sweepstake Judges, Mrs. Judy A. Corbett and Mrs. Rachel Romano Kelly.

The redesign of the Specialty resulted in a massive influx of entries…and we were ready for them! Winning your class or breed group comes naturally with bragging rights, but we also wanted to provide a special momentum for all our winners. As such, we worked with Oak Hill Pottery to design a custom image that will be protected for VCOI use only. It’s more than just a show logo; it’s a statement about our club and the pride we take in our Vizsla companion’s accomplishments. Much like Westminster has an innate association with the Kelley Green floor and prestige, our design needed to be memorable, unique, and invoke a feeling of accomplishment. Our design features a Vizsla in mid stride touting its win as it carries the ribbon, painted with the appropriate win color, in its mouth. The design was promoted on all trophies, which were donated by breed patrons. A very special thank you goes out to all who sponsored. Times are tough and it takes a special heart to donate these awards, so instead of the traditional thank you, we added the donor names on a card for each trophy with a reminder to personaly thank the sponsor who had provided the award.

The day of the show finally arrived…and it was a hot one! Scorching temperatures meant that keeping our four legged and two legged friends cool was a top priority. Thankfully, we had planned in advance and had a tent prepared. The tent provided much needed shade and shelter from the heat. It was conveniently located next to the ring so entrants could set up crates, socialize, as well as partake in our luncheon and raffle.

All in all, it was a fantastic weekend that went off without a hitch! Congratulations to all the winners and we will have photos available online soon! This was truly a best in class event and we can’t wait to make it even better next year!

It takes a village to host an event of this caliber and I am so very proud and thankful for everyone’s help, commitment, magnitude, and desire to see this event rise to being the very best.
