September
3, 2007 Hunt Test
Des
Plaines Fishing & Wildlife Area, Wilmington, IL
The
September sun rose early over the treeline at the Des Plaines
Fish & Wildlife Area as the 2007 VCOI Labor Day Hunt test
began. It was another steamy day on the prairie, yet 31 dogs and
their two-legged companions enjoyed a full day of activities.
There were many new people and
new dogs participating in the Labor Day Hunt Test this year, and
we welcome them all. This year’s hunt test comprised seven
dogs at the Masters level, of which three received qualifying
scores. There were eight Seniors, but unfortunately no qualifiers
in this group. Sixteen enthusiastic Juniors ran, with twelve qualifying.
Committee chairs Kathy and Jeff
Engelsman coordinated bird planting, line marshalling, scoring,
and countless details to make the day a success. Judges Greg DuBois
and Ted Selnes braved the heat throughout the day, and we extend
a big thanks to them for their efforts (and endurance!). Special
thanks to gunners Jeremy Thill and Mike Dalby for bringing down
the birds for Masters and Seniors. Jenny Thill, Tammy Sparks,
and Valerie Blaine shared record keeping duties. The Franks provided
the use of their ATV which was worth its weight in gold throughout
the day. Thanks to Kim Frank for being Line Marshal extraordinaire,
and to Doug Frank for delivering water to the thirsty folks (and
dogs) on the course. Extra kitchen help was provided by Cameron
and Tory Frank, whose motto was “service with a smile.”
After another successful, albeit
warm, Labor Day Hunt Test, we now look to a great hunting season
with our awesome dogs!
